I’m Louise Poole Andy: And I’m Andy Le Roy, and we’re giving you the insights that elevate you as the expert in your field Elevating Experts! Louise: Looking back to this time last year, this podcast and Welcome Change Media in general wasn’t even a glint in our eye. Andy: But somewhere along the way, we both decided it was time to take the plunge and start our own business, but like any major happening, these decisions can be very daunting daunting if you let them Louise: We both bring lots of experience with a really wide skill set, but there were… are times when we can get paralysed by fear, just like anyone else. Andy: It’s all good and well for someone to say “just do it”, but there’s usually a bunch of processes that go on behind that action, sop we decided to beak it down and see exactly, what helped us to just do it. Louise: Like any good venture, this all started out with a grand idea to make a podcast. Andy: We had a nice idea for a great little program that would help us to grow and offer the same opportunity to anyone listening. Louise: And while we’ve started recording that particular one and putting it together, it’s not the one you’re listening to at the moment. Andy: Nope, and it’s not the other one we started to get used to using all of the podcasting tools either. Louise: That’s a different one again, but just as important in the scheme of things. Andy: You see, the more we brain stormed, the more great ideas we came up with and before long we had the beginnings of Welcome Change Media Louise: It was around this time we figured we wanted to give it a go, so we had to look at the pros and cons of how to go about it. Andy: We didn’t want to get ourselves into a mountain of debt. Louise: And we wanted to keep creative control and ownership of what we produce Andy: For us, it was a case of starting from scratch and doing what’s affectionately known as bootstrapping. Louise: This is a fancy way of saying that we’re using our savings to make and grow our business. But the important thing here is that we could only come to that decision once we knew what was important to us. Andy: When it came to structure and taxation, we did our research and spoke to some advisors. There are plenty of people out there to help and point you to a stack of information that relevant to where you operate from. Louise: Then we arrived at day 1, the 15th of January 2021. Andy: It was a bit like starting a new job, except this time, we were the ones running the show. Louise: We brought together our likes and dislikes from our previous work experience and built out work flows out of the things we have always found to work well. If we weren’t sure about something, we tried it. Andy: If it didn’t work for us, we tried something else. Louise: Bit by bit, day by day, we kept growing and shaping our ideas until, finally, we have what we have right now. Andy: Several Welcome Change Media productions and a business stream that supports us in making other projects that are important to us. Louise: At every step of the way, I’d say we “just did it” Andy: But it’s also important to acknowledge that there are many smaller steps we just had to do, which has made the bigger goal easier to reach over time. Louise: And I’d say one of the biggest factors that has boosted our confidence and helped us to keep going is to keep track and celebrate the milestones Andy: Every week we look at what we have achieved and celebrate our successes. Louise: And sometimes we take an even bigger look back to see just how far we’ve come, like the day we launched Elevating Experts Andy: It was exciting to see, not quote five months into our journey, that we had made something and released it to the world Louise: Now that’s got to give you confidence! Andy: Sure does! So let’s have a quick review now and go over our recipe for success in “just doing it” Louise: Look at your options and weigh up the pros and cons. This will help you decide based on what’s important to you. Andy: As you start to hit new territory, get your thinking cap on and do some research to see how to go about things Louise: Don’t be afraid to try new things – you can always change them, but always stick to what serves you best – there’s real comfort in familiarity Andy: Break your big goal into small steps that aren’t anywhere near as daunting Louise: And make a point of reviewing your progress at the end of every week – it’s important to celebrate your progress! Andy: When you’re informed and know what you’re setting out to do in small steps, suddenly it’s easy to “just do it”.
